I just got done reading through the latest ”Friday Funny” list over at Ian’s Messy Desk and it made me laugh, as usual. Today he posted Fun Things to Do During Boring Sermons. Of course I’ve seen this before. But I am still cracking up about it, maybe more now because I have my own child and what in the world would I do to him if he tried any of those things?
The one about turning the other cheek is an especially funny image. The verse in the Bible is Matthew 5:39. Of course, it is best to read the whole chapter as it is important to understand the context in which this verse is said.
I understand the attitude Christ is looking for here-I have to use it from time to time-but I’ll tell you (in the interest of real honesty), if someone hauled off and slapped me during the church service, I’d be real tempted to let them have it between the eyes, and I’m not talking about a slap. I am not a violent person, but I punched my share of boys in elementary school for making fun of me.
Of course, there’s really no reason to be striking people in church at all. If you have a quarrel with someone, take it outside after the sermon and handle it like grown ups.
